Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi Premieres in 1931

Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, David Manners, Helen Chandler, Dwight Frye and Edward Van Sloan, premiered in New York City on February 12, 1931. Lugosi of course has the title role, appearing as the evil Count Dracula, who leaves his gothic castle in the Carpathian Mountains and takes up residence at Carfax Abbey in England. Here he feeds on the local females until Professor Van Helsing (Sloan) catches him napping in his coffin and drives a wooden stake right through the old boy’s ticker.

Made at a cost of $ 355,000, Dracula was both a critical and financial success. “It is difficult to think of anybody who could quite match the performance in the vampire part of Bela Lugosi, even to the faint flavor of foreign speech that fits so neatly,” raved Variety in 1931.

Original 1931 Dracula Movie Posters

Dracula one sheet movie posters are legendary in the field. They were produced in four different styles: style A (full color with menacing Lugosi), style B (photographic duotone), style C (Dracula’s watchful eyes only) and the highly-coveted style F. Original one sheet Dracula movie posters, measuring the standard 27×41-inches, are exceedingly rare with only a handful of examples surviving the 1931 theatrical release.

The style F one sheet features a color illustration of Dracula towering over a fleeing Renfield on the cargo ship Vesta along with the tagline, “The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!” One of these surviving gems came up for sale in a 2009 offering at Heritage Auction Galleries, where it fetched an astounding (and downright scary) $ 310,700.

The style B one sheet poster, done in Halloween orange and black and featuring a prominent Bela Lugosi and other cast members fenced in behind a spider’s web, is another super rarity, with only two known copies in existence. It’s valued at $ 150,000-250,000+.

The Dracula half sheet poster, measuring 22×28-inches, is yet another rarity. One poster dealer has a standing buy offer of $ 50,000 for this paper gem.

Dracula 1931 Lobby Cards, Jumbo Lobby Card, Pressbook, Movie Herald

Dracula produced a set of eight color lobby cards – so named because they were displayed in theater lobbies to promote the picture. The most valuable entry in the set is the title card, which can sell for $ 30,000-65,000 in top condition. The other so-called “scene cards” are also highly sought after, with values ranging from $ 5,000-45,000, depending on condition and desirability.

Dracula’s rare 1931 jumbo lobby cards, measuring 14×16-inches, are also high on any collector’s want list. Pictured on one are Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler and a kneeling Dwight Frye. It carries an estimated value of $ 12,000-18,000.

The Dracula Exhibitor’s Campaign manual, or pressbook, is another huge item with collectors. This eight-page catalog, given to theater owners as a tool to promote the movie, is filled with sample illustrations of posters, lobby cards, window cards, tie-in stills, slides and bookmarks. One example in complete, very fine condition sold at auction for $ 15,535.

Dracula produced a number of movie heralds that were distributed by theaters. One such herald, advertising the February 12, 1931, premiere at New York City’s Roxy Theatre, brought $ 1,314.50 at auction. A smaller three-color version fetched $ 836.50.

Original 1931 Dracula Movie Stills

Universal Pictures produced a series of 8×10 b/w stills that were used to promote the picture in magazines and newspapers. One example, picturing Bela Lugosi going for Helen Chandler’s neck, brought a top bid of $ 1,553.50 at auction.

Other original Dracula stills range in value from $ 75 to $ 1,000, depending on rarity and condition.

Dracula Reissue Memorabilia

Dracula was re-released in the United States in 1938, 1947, 1951 and 1963. Posters, lobby cards and other items from these re-releases are also highly collectible. The 1951 three sheet poster from Realart, measuring 14×36-inches, is a real gem, with one example fetching $ 3,883.75 at auction.

Other selling prices for Dracula reissue items include a 1938 lobby card picturing Lugosi and Helen Chandler ($ 1,673), a 1951 Realart half sheet poster ($ 1,075.50), a 1951 Realart lobby card featuring Lugosi and Edward Van Sloan ($ 507.88) and a 1963 one sheet poster ($ 1,314.50).

Fake 1931 Dracula Movie Posters and Lobby Cards

Unfortunately, the hobby/business has reported the existence of counterfeit high-end movie posters and lobby cards, including fakes for Dracula. According to LearnAboutMoviePosters.com, the images of older inexpensive movie posters and lobby cards were reportedly sanded off by unscrupulous parties and replaced by high-resolution images. They were then painted or airbrushed, giving the fake poster/lobby card the look of an authentic paper artifact that had been legitimately repaired or restored.

The counterfeit watch for Dracula movie material includes the following, with the estimated value for the original item in parenthesis: 1931 lobby card 3 panel version ($ 15,000), 1931 lobby card Lugosi carrying Helen Chandler scene ($ 15,000), 1931 lobby card three Dracula brides scene ($ 12,000), 1931 title lobby card ($ 40,000), 1931 window card ($ 30,000), 1947 reissue one sheet poster ($ 45,000).

Review of Star Trek, the Movie of 2009

Trends in fashion trainers and shoes are actually only that – developments. Styles are often consistently changing. G Star Jeans.

That means we all must keep an eye on the developments usingselective information.

A blog about G star jeans needs ongoing work. Some of it is syndicated from other sources. Some of the content is unique.

The overall plan is to bring and after that bring together a great deal of advice as is feasible.

All of this inevitably results in an compelling post.

Or maybe most of us could rather quickly get outdated in a lot of our practical knowledge of the details of G star jeans.

After seeing the movie myself and being aware of the gripes of profaning the vision of its Creator, Gene Roddenberry,  I have to say many of the complaints come from viewers who aren’t old enough to be familiar with the Gene Roddenberry legacy to really judge. Or, are the complaining fans just so much older that they don’t want this cherished icon to change?

Back in the bad-ol’-days, we fans were faced with bomb shelters and Power Mongers  with fingers on the buttons that would end the world and our lives.  “Star Trek” gave us hope that civilization wasn’t going to end with us.  We gained hope that the adults who had fubarred the world would find a way after all to let us live long enough to try to fix the problems. (We baby-boomers are still working on it and we did find a cure for AIDS with transplanted mutated genes.)

What do you mean this new movie doesn’t follow the original vision? For one thing, if Gene Roddenberry needed a circumstance for a plot,  he invented one: everything from Universal Translators to love interests that would be terminal to a salt vampire for a villain were written in to make the show flow.  The excellent writers of this production did the same thing.  Why not a paradox that simply exists?  How many Americans bought the Magic Bullet Theory from the Kennedy assassination?  A paradox in time is more likely than that story line.

“Star Trek” was so much more than a television show.  I know: I wrote to the network to save “Star Trek” when the deplorable news circulated that they wanted to cancel the show.  NBC has been the “Nothing But Clown’s network to me often since the next year after we saved the series, they cancelled it anyway.  They killed it off by putting it on Friday nights, the night the school’s athletic events took place and date night for many of us kids.  Recorders were not in place yet so we were Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition, or F. U. B. A. R., over that decision.
Then the bright people with vision did a wonderful thing, SEVEN long years later: they made a movie which passed into legend.  Better late than never, folks.

For you old-line fans, what’s wrong with learning about the favorite characters before they were on the Enterprise?  Nothing.  It was good to see some more of the influences that made them who they are.  You didn’t complain when we learned about Jean Luc Picard’s life in France. The “Star Trek” legend grew to make how many spin offs for decades? And ten movies! The information about the crew is still intriguing even at this late date; plus, it is novel for fans who haven’t waited over thirty-six years for it. And even the new fans remember Kirk’s shirt being torn off for the delight of young, romantic girls.  That hasn’t changed. Bet on it.

Coming upon the scene with the brand new Enterprise was thrilling for this original Trekkie who saw the episodes the first time they were broadcast when I was still in high school.  Gone are the cardboard doors we fans noted in favor of a beautiful bridge, gleaming like a newly-cut jewel. I was so proud of the directors, J. J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, and grateful for that surge of pride and wonder after all these years.

It is important to tell the new generation fans (some of whom are geeks and nerds who will run the world fairly soon) to quit belly-aching about bastardizing Roddenberry’s vision.  The vision still holds and grows and that’s the real legacy of the visionary Gene Roddenberry.   The new generation star ship is gorgeous with the crew bound for glory, just like yesterday.

As for the cast, there is some brilliant casting for us Trekkies.  We have accepted characters for the new crop of bridge personnel due to the intelligent picks. We all know Zachary Quinto who played Sylar from “Heros” as Spock and accept him completely as a more three dimensional character than Dear Leonard Nimoy was allowed to be most of the time. Chris Pine as James T. Kirk  is faithful as the Young Turk of early Enterprise days.  He is going to be a household name from this.
Harold, John Cho, is back from White Castle and from his part in “American Pie”. He is playing Sulu, who fences still. Maybe we can have him visit an intergalactic White Castle in an upcoming movie. And Leonard Nimoy: it is so good to see you again! Did you folks know Leonard released an album long ago?   (One line we all loved was, “Stars falling on Alabama? Most illogical.”)

Bones, Karl Urban,  was earlier related to King Theodan in “Lord of the Rings”.  He is a perfect and grand version of Leonard McCoy in younger years.  Uhura is getting it on with Spock, how cool, and she, Zoe Saldana, was in “The Chronicles of Riddick.”  Bruce Greenwood, Captain Christopher Pike, is in keeping with the original series and a welcome addition to the cast of our legend.

Simon Peg, “You bet yer arse!” Scotty, is terrific. The audience roared at his declaration as he ran like a banshee to save the day.  He avoided becoming a zombie in “Shaun of the Dead” and was an excellent policeman – excuse me, Police officer, in “Hot Fuzz,” to name two movies he has been in.

We liked Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov.  (Seventeen! Dear Lord, we feel old now and so did the officer he told his age to.)  The man can run when necessary even if he can’t pronounce a “v” properly.  Eric Bana as Nero is excellent and staring in yet another movie playing soon.

In short, the new cast, heros and villains,  is appropriate, talented and promising.  We want to see more movies with them in space in whatever time line they can manage to exist in. And the new gray knobby guy, too. (Did you know the network was timid about portraying aliens in the original series as being too frightening or weird for many viewers? We fans knew better and wanted more aliens.)

Everything about this new vision is spot on, including the music by Michael Giacchino and the musicians who played it. The “In Memory of” to the Roddenberrys, Majel Barret- Roddenberry and Gene, of course, was necessary. Cinematography’s Daniel Mindel, and all the good people who made this possible are owed a standing ovation, too.  The audience did clap at the ending, by the way.

The Torch is passed for a new generation of Trekkies to create more of the legend that is “Star Trek”.  Boldly go were no one has gone–yet. * * *

Tees Maar Khan movie review

TMK Bollywood suppose to be most valuable movie with its Top casting  under the directory  Farah Khan could not reach to the expectations of the masses and fails to induce enough laughs, romance or excitement. TEES MAAR KHAN is another addition to the cheat cavort list.

Farah Khan the director of earlier block busters like OM SHANTI OM MAIN HOON NA has given her best in form of direction. TEES MAAR KHAN is her first movie without her blue-eyed boy, Shahrukh Khan. Seems Farah is highly impressed by the successful pair of  Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in films like NAMASTEY LONDON, WELCOME, SINGH IS KINNG and DE DANA DAN, and tried out to cast one under her own direction.  The buzz of the film is pretty strong due to heavy promotions, with Sheila ki Jawani already being a chart buster.

The Story Line of TEES MAAR KHAN -  Tabrez Mirza Khan aka Tees Maar Khan (Akshay Kumar), who had had a strong impact of his mother watching criminal movies when he was in her womb. He become a diehard robber since  the day he is born. Even the police find it impossible to catch hold of him.  Anya (Katrina Kaif) is his dumb girlfriend, who wants to be a top actress.

One day, international antique smugglers,  Johri brothers (Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman) assign Akshay  a task of robbing antiques worth 500 crore rupees from a moving train. Whether he is  able to or not is you to find out.

TMK starts off on a rocking note.. The attractive style make the first half a fun ride. Farah Khan’s clowning comedy is a fun in the beginning but fizz out as the film progresses. The post interval, makes you  restless,  and impatient as there is no connectivity in the movie. Only one thing that seems to work here is Akshaye Khanna. He plays the Oscar-crazy superstar as a hilarious crazy and somehow manages to pull off the joke. A complete surprise act from Akshaye Khanna!
