What is a Jacket?
The following are three short explanations of the word jacket. I hope they are of interest. Jackets of course form the basis of a man’s wardrobe. Practically every brand offers a jacket range, for example the G Star Mens Jacket range. Jackets are ubiquitous and essential in every sense of the word.
We start with a Wikipedia quotation:
“A jacket is a type of sleeved hip- or waist-length garment for the upper body. For clothing older than the mid-nineteenth century, a distinction is often maintained with a coat, but in many instances the terms are now interchangeable. A jacket is generally shorter, ending just below the waist, and often lighter. Some jackets are fashionable, while others serve as protective clothing”.

The second is a dictionary definition:
Jacket [ˈdʒækɪt]
- (Clothing & Fashion) a short coat, esp one that is hip-length and has a front opening and sleeves
- something that resembles this or is designed to be worn around the upper part of the body a life jacket.

We finally turn to answers.com for the third definition:
“A short coat usually extending to the hips.”
