The earliest documented variety of hoody that resembles the current day version was the cowl with hood favored by monks across Europe in the Middle Ages.

It is thought that the modern version of the hoody emerged in the 1930s when clothing company Champion made the garment for warehouse workmen, to protect them from icy cold temperatures. It promptly caught on among working men.

The hoody acquired popular interest when taken-up by designers like Claire McCardell, who made it a central constituent of her designs for clothing ranges.

The modern day acceptance of the hoody, and the extent of it’s adoption in every day life, possibly dates back to the 1970s and the hip hop culture. The hoody provides rapid anonymity and cover and is popular for criminals. This gave the hoody an edgy cool. Popular culture quickly caught on. For example in the boxing hero movie ‘Rocky’ the hoody is a central part of the image. It wasn’t too long before the hoody gained additional kudos as a gritty urban clothing item. The hoody has since been adopted by the urban poor in both the UK, the USA and parts of Europe. and has gone on to be an incredibly popular and common garment.

Several companies now design and create hoodies. A remarkable example is the hoody range from G Star Raw – check out this example G Star Mens Hoody.
