Many radical changes in design and style have occurred over the last 100 years. Costs are lower, many new materials are available and style has changed a lot. Modern womens labels such as G Star womens clothes would have been unthinkable in say 1920.
1900 was the era of long dresses that covered the legs.
The Hobble Skirt arrived in 1910. It was so tight and pinched that women literally had to hobble to walk in it.

The first bra the world had seen was invented in 1913 by Mary Crosby. It was made from a ribbon holding two handkerchiefs.
1915 saw the first twist of the lipstick tube.

The length of womens’ knickers shortened during the 1920s, making their way steadily from below to above the knee.

The 1920s also saw a change in fashion from a feminine look toward a more boyish styles during the mid-20s. The leather alternate vinyl was created in 1924 and included into styles and designs.
Womens’ styles changed again in the 1930s when women became slightly more conservative and feminine.
It was during the 1930s that Nylon was invented by Wallace Carothers. This {brought new design ideas|enabled a whole range of new clothing ideas.

During World War 2 textile was rationed, like everything else, and so the skirts became. Clothing rationing continued until 1949 (unbelievably the rationing of food continued until 1954 in the UK).

A fresh wave of design occurred once the war had ended. 1946 saw the arrival of the bikini. The hour glass figure was squeezed into our consciousness in 1947.
In 1946 the bikini was revealed to the world. In 1947 the ‘New Look’ from Christian Dior was introduced bringing long skirts and narrow waists – the hour glass figure had been born. The second half of the 1940s was a time of fashion invention.
The 1950s saw the appearance of fuller, longer skirts and the celebration of a more feminine style.
Mary Quant invented the mini skirt in the mid 1960s and clothes became even more daring in colour and design.
